Scams usually exploit context, not ignorance alone

Many tourist scams do not require elaborate deception. They work because the traveler is in motion, outside normal routines, unsure of local norms, and trying not to be rude.

The recurring pattern

A scam often combines three things:

  • urgency
  • ambiguity
  • social pressure

When those appear together, people make decisions faster and verify less.

Why solo travelers can feel singled out

A solo traveler is easier to isolate conversationally and harder to cross-check in the moment.

That does not mean solo travel is inherently unsafe. It means pressure tactics work best when they can narrow your attention and speed up your choices.
